The summit of Independence Pass also coincides with the Continental Divide. The Divide marks the crest where rivers originating east of it flow to the Atlantic Ocean and rivers originating west of it flow to the Pacific Ocean.
The town of Independence was founded July 4, 1879, when gold was discovered nearby. It became a ghost town a few years later when the gold was gone.
