Split has a unique historical heritage, having grown out of the palace built here by the Roman Emperor Diocletian in 295AD. The palace remains the central ingredient of the inner city, having been slowly transformed after Diocletian's successors had departed.
The backyard and waterfront of the former Diocletian's palace is now replete with tourists and locals enjoying the outdoor cafes and promenade.
It was great fun exploring the many passageways within the former palace.
Many of the passageways were shaded by the colorful Bougainvillea
The catacombs beneath the former palace are fascinating to observe and now have evolved into a unique shopping area with a large variety of vendors.
It was quite a treat to happen upon this group of excellent Dalmatian singers as we explored the inner city.
We take the overnight ferry from Split, Croatia to Ancona, Italy.
