Barges take goods up and down the Rhine River.The Rhine River has been and still is a much busier commerce mover than the Mosel. Perhaps as a result, the Rhine Valley exudes a bit more energy and things seem somewhat higher paced.

The castles along the Rhine were often used to guard the river and only allow ships' passage after payment of a toll.
Several castles now provide unique lodging experiences. We stayed one lovely night in the Castle Liebenstein.
